We are designers, thinkers, and innovators
Dubbeldam Architecture + Design is a multi-disciplinary design studio committed to creating thoughtful projects that embody sustainable approaches. Founded by architect Heather Dubbeldam, our studio has developed a reputation for innovative, beautifully crafted, and environmentally responsible architecture, interiors, and landscapes that support and enrich the human experience. We have been recognized as one of Canada’s leading architecture practices for our commitment to architectural excellence and dedication to social responsibility through advocacy.
Forward-thinking projects at all scales
Our work ranges in scale and across various building typologies but consistently strives to reimagine. With a diverse portfolio embodying a wide range of project types that are unified in their dedication to the highest quality design, our work ranges from homes, multi-unit residential projects, workspaces, hospitality, and mixed-use buildings, to landscape design and architectural installations. From Toronto’s first rowing studio to dynamic tech offices like Slack Technologies and Travelzoo, as well as media companies like Azure magazine, the Interior Design Show (Informa), or coworking spaces, we design environments that support innovation and creativity. Our hospitality portfolio includes boutique hotels, private clubs, and indie coffee shops that foster connection and bring people together. Our housing projects explore ways to redefine modern living, focusing on homes and multi-unit residential developments that prioritize liveability and sustainability.
By developing each project in response to its specific challenges, we seek to find an authentic expression that embodies the spirit of place and people. Through rigorous explorations that challenge convention, we strive to find new solutions and approaches to address today’s challenges through design.
Research-driven design
Continuous research guiding our work and design methodology is central to our approach, firmly rooted in environmental and social sustainability. We engage in self-initiated design research focused on enhancing livability within residential environments. We have been commissioned by Sidewalk Labs to conduct research on micro and co-living, as well as by CreateTO to develop missing middle prototypes and pilot projects. Our ongoing research into progressive sustainable design in Canada and Scandinavia focuses on regenerative architecture, climate-positive developments, urban resilience, and the cultural factors that influence their adoption in Canada. This fundamental research-driven approach underscores our commitment to creating spaces that are not only energy-efficient but also promote health and well-being, enhancing the way we live, work, and play.
Leadership through outreach and engagement
Our core values are deeply rooted in social impact, pursued through excellence in design and practice, as well as through leadership and advocacy. We believe that our role as architects should extend beyond the challenge of creating inspirational and functional spaces. It should also involve advocating for better, more sustainable built environments, pushing the boundaries of design innovation, and advocating for social and environmental justice through our work. We lead by example through our practices and policies and by actively promoting equity and diversity within our industry, promoting women’s representation and advancement in the field. Our initiatives like Twenty + Change provide a platform to promote the work of emerging Canadian architects and designers, actively supporting emerging practices nationwide. Through our leadership of Park(ing) Day Toronto, we encourage equitable social spaces in the public realm.
Our practice has been recognized with over 90 awards for design excellence, advocacy, and practice, including the Ontario Association of Architects Best Emerging Practice Award in our early years, the Canada Council for the Arts Professional Prix de Rome, the RAIC Advocate for Architecture Award, the 2024 RAIC Architectural Practice Award, and several Canada Green Building awards. Our work continues to generate international recognition.
