Canada–Denmark Roundtable at the Canadian Embassy
A Canada–Denmark roundtable hosted by the Canadian Embassy in Copenhagen brought together architects, policymakers, developers, and industry leaders to explore shared challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the built environment. Heather Dubbeldam delivered the opening keynote, building on a longstanding connection to Denmark that began more than a decade ago and was later deepened through the Canadian Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture, which supported the firm’s research into sustainable architecture across Scandinavia and led to The Next Green research initiative.
The roundtable convened leaders from both countries to exchange perspectives on housing supply, low-carbon construction, mass timber, and the policy frameworks influencing development. Discussions examined how Canada and Denmark are responding to rapid urban growth, affordability pressures, and the transition to more sustainable models of building and city-making.
Heather’s keynote highlighted the conditions shaping contemporary practice in Canada, including the national housing crisis, evolving zoning policies, growing investment in mass timber and prefabrication, and the opportunities presented by climate-responsive design. Bringing together Canadian and Danish perspectives, the discussion underscored the value of international collaboration and knowledge exchange in advancing more sustainable, resilient, and livable communities.
