Annex House

The main intent of the design of this project was to create an open plan with delineating elements other than walls, that both define and connect spaces through transparency, materiality, and a play of voids and solids. In this manner, various free-standing and built-in furniture components — such as storage units, screens, stairs, and built-in benches — are used as devices to divide, screen, connect, and animate. Conducive to entertaining, these devices create a dialogue between the spaces, framing specific views, and creating the perception of a larger space. As the interior elements mediate the way in which each space is engaged — giving each room its own vantage, character and intimacy — the open concept allows for informality.
